Is This a False Positive IgM Herpes Results or What?

(Angela us ny)

My IgM is positive and my IgG is negative I dont now what is going on. I am 20 weeks pregnant.

Answer

The HSV IgM/IgG blood tests are highly unreliable. Yes, it is almost certain that it is a false positive result.

IgM antibodies develop in response to most infections more rapidly than IgG antibodies, then goes away as IgG antibodies increases in amount. Thus, the presence of IgM antibodies is supposed to indicate recent infection, and its absence (in the presence of IgG antibodies) is evidence of an infection at least several months previously.

You can have a repeat test but truly I don't think it's necessary. I'm confident you don't have it.
