Is Lectroject (iontophoresis) F.D.A approved? Are doctors using it in the US?
Answer
Iontophoretic drug delivery has been available for many years and is an accepted form of therapy. The FDA approved the process way back in the 1970’s. The medication used with the machine - Penciclovir received its FDA approval in 1996 and Acyclovir in late 2002.
Not that we know of, because doctors can't use it until its FDA approved. You can only use it yourself, to investigate its uses. Second, until its FDA approved, it's illegal for doctors or anyone selling a product to tell you that it cures anything. Even if medical studies show that a product cures everything, those who say so without FDA approval can be charged with making "fraudulent medical claims" and "mislabeling."
Well, then why not get FDA approval for this therapy would you ask? Primarily because bringing a product to market through FDA approval costs about $234 million. That's only about 3 days of earnings for the prescription drug industry, but probably more than you could spare.
