ME/CFS also known as Yuppie Flu

Although there is some controversy about Yuppie Flu it has been found that the patients suffering from the disease test positive for the following viruses:

Cox B1 - B6 and Cytomegalovirus.

Coxsackie B viruses are also implicated in cardiomyopathy. A disease which causes the heart to become enlarged and ineffective – Once this stage is reached, a transplant is usually required.

Yuppie flu: (medical condition): Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis

(CFS/ME) is a syndrome that has only recently been described by the medical profession. Typically CFS/ME follows a viral infection (e.g. cold or viral stomach bug), and is sometimes found after mononucleosis infection. Non-specific symptoms are fatigue, tiredness, exhaustion, and aches. The condition is often misdiagnosed as depression.

We all get tired. Many of us at times have felt depressed. But the mystery known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS/ME) is not like normal ups and downs we experience in every day life. The early sign of this illness is a strong and noticeable fatigue that comes on suddenly and often comes and goes or never stops. You feel too tired to do normal activities or are easily exhausted with no apparent reason. It slyly steals your energy and vigor over months and sometimes years.

Besides causing a simple fever, headache, and muscle aches, Coxsackie viruses can cause several different patterns of symptoms that affect different body parts.

• Encephalitis and Meningitis, an infection of the meninges (the three membranes that envelop the brain and spinal cord), and rarely, encephalitis, a brain infection. They may also cause myocarditis, an infection of the heart muscle, as well as pericarditis and cardiomyopathy. diseases affecting the brain are also caused by these viruses. The symptoms all include tiredness, lack of energy, often with short breath and depression.

• Hand, foot, and mouth disease (a type of Coxsackie virus syndrome) causes painful red blisters in the throat and on the tongue, gums, inside of the cheeks and the palms of hands and soles of the feet.

• Herpangina, a Coxsackie virus infection of the throat, causes red-ringed blisters and ulcers on the tonsils and soft palate, the fleshy back portion of the roof of the mouth.

• Pleurodynia (also called Bornholm disease) is a related coxsackie virus infection that causes painful spasms in the muscles of the chest and upper abdomen. Males with pleurodynia may also have pain in the testicles beginning about 2 weeks after the chest pain starts.

• Haemorrhagic conjunctivitis is an infection that affects the whites of the eyes. Haemorrhagic conjunctivitis usually starts out as eye pain and is suddenly followed by red, watery eyes, swelling, light sensitivity, and blurry vision.
